Wolf's Lair – The Failed Assassination Attempt on Hitler

July 20, 1944. A hot summer day in the heart of the Masurian forest. Hidden deep among the trees stood Hitler's secret military headquarters – the Wolf's Lair. It was here that one of the most daring and dramatic plots to end World War II from within was set in motion.

 

 

A conspiracy that could have changed history

A group of high-ranking Wehrmacht officers, led by Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg, decided to take action. Their goal was to assassinate Hitler and take control of the government to end the war and save Germany from complete destruction. The plan involved placing a bomb under the table in the Wolf's Lair’s conference barracks during a military meeting.

What went wrong?

Stauffenberg managed to smuggle a briefcase containing explosives into the conference room and left just minutes before the bomb detonated. The explosion occurred at 12:42 PM, killing four officers and injuring several others. But Hitler survived. He had shifted his position during the meeting, and a massive oak table absorbed much of the blast. Believing the assassination had succeeded, Stauffenberg returned to Berlin to initiate the next phase of the coup.

The aftermath

Although the plot failed, its consequences were immense. Hitler tightened his control over the military, and a brutal wave of repression followed. Thousands were arrested, executed, or persecuted – not only the conspirators but also their families and anyone suspected of disloyalty. Stauffenberg was executed that same night.
